Woulda Coulda Shoulda, Didn’t!

If I were to become more of a famous writer my history as a writer would start out somewhat simple.

As a child I was told I’d make up stories of things that either happened or didn’t happen, depending on who I was talking to. I suppose most kids did that, but it seems I did this quite frequently to the point certain people bring this up decades later!

In high school, we were to write a journal every week. I do not remember the specifics, but I recall I’d take an observation of mine, write a story around it, then end it with a one line quip.

Granted, the teacher was probably being nice with comments on how she loved what I was doing. Does not matter, as I was enjoying doing this all the same.

Fast forward to college. Taking English classes, I continued to do the above but with somewhat more mature subjects, at least to me. Looking back on them, the writing was pretty bad.

However, the English professor noticed. He would pull me to the side and encourage me to transfer, apply to schools such as Cambridge and Oxford.

Now, I grew up like Steve Martin did in that movie that is probably not kosher today. The professor’s suggestions were so far fetched that I told him that would not something I was interested in. Truth is, I knew nothing of what he spoke of.

I am an avid reader. I think sometimes I should grow from that to become a writer. Sad to say, I’ve seen my share of poorly written books. I’ve written a couple of authors to suggest letting me read their books before release so I could make suggestions. Yes, I did that, and you already know where that went.

Later, I investigated becoming a proofreader as I know I’d be good at that. This is not writing of course, but shows my bent.

I looked into being a technical writer. I’d read technology books and think to myself I could write these so much better. Boring stuff.

To become more of a writer would consume a lot of time that I am not sure I am willing to sacrifice right now. I am content to write a story like this once a week or so. I have a lot to learn.

Thanks for reading. God bless!
